First-year students to be
eligible for Robertson program
In February 2010, light and dark blue will come together as
a few first-year students at Carolina and Duke University become part of the
Robertson Scholars Program.
The leadership program provides full four-year merit
scholarships for students at both universities. This fall, two current
first-year students from each school will be invited to become Robertson
Scholars. They will enter the program in the spring semester and join the
Robertson class of 2013.
Until now, the program has been open only to high school
seniors. The program’s board of directors recently approved the new initiative
to invite four first-year students after receiving feedback from more than 30
Duke and Carolina administrators and faculty.
The initiative is a pilot program to take place this year
and next, adding four students each to the scholars classes of 2013 and 2014.
Currently 140 Robertson Scholars study at the two
universities. Students enroll at one campus but take classes at both. They also
spend one semester in residence at the other university.
Created in 2000 through a gift from Julian and Josie
Robertson, the program offers full tuition, room and board, and fees. It also
provides laptops and three summers of domestic and international experiences.
The scholars come together for research projects, leadership development,
service-learning programs and seminars.
Information sessions for interested students will be offered
at both campuses. Those at Carolina are scheduled for November 16–19, all
at 4 p.m. in 116 Murphey Hall. University leaders are encouraged to identify
potential student candidates and urge them to attend an information session.
