Going Global
Sophomore Brendan Yorke shows off a painting created by
Rosalie Kilabuk, one of a group of Inuit youth he worked with last summer in
the remote hamlet of Pang, Nunavut, Canada.
When he returned to Carolina, Yorke took part in GO!
Global’s follow-up workshop, designed to give students a forum in which to
discuss their experiences as well as strategies for readjustment and remaining
connected to important issues and populations they engaged
with abroad.
Yorke, a double major in psychology and intercultural
education with a minor in entrepreneurship, is now an advocate for the Center
for Global Initiatives’ GO! Global pre-departure orientation as well, which he
missed last spring. “The GO! Global Orientation would have helped me prepare
for the cultural and ethical hurdles I would face abroad,” Yorke said. “I came
into Pang, Nunavut, with my own goals clear in mind; however, I really could
have benefited from more sensitivity to the community and cultural atmosphere.
“At GO!, you interact with Carolina students engaged in
global initiatives. The networking provided by this orientation would have
helped me apply lessons learned abroad to UNC and local communities.”
GO! Global represents a collaboration of nearly a dozen
campus units.
This spring’s pre-departure orientation is planned for April
16 to provide training for students doing service, service-learning, research
or internships in Asia, Africa, Latin America or the Middle East.
It will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the FedEx Global
Education Center. To register, see cgi.unc.edu/go. |
