`Partners in Giving' theme of combined campaign

The State Employees Combined Campaign will kick off its annual fund-raiser on Oct. 4. With a theme of "Partners in Giving," organizers hope to raise $830,000 for local, state and national non-profit organizations through the Orange County Campaign, which runs from Oct. 4 through Nov. 5.

Sue Kitchen, vice chancellor for student affairs and SECC co-chair, said that the campaign offers employees a wonderful opportunity to support agencies that provide services right here at home and also to those that make a difference around the world.

"The State Employees Combined Campaign is the only state approved fund-raising campaign that allows employees to payroll deduct their contributions, and they can give to one or as many causes as they want to support," Kitchen said.

This year, the campaign will begin with a volunteer rally in the auditorium of the Student Union on Oct. 4 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. All volunteers are encouraged to attend the rally and those that do will have a chance to win door prizes.

"The volunteer rally is a chance to really pump up enthusiasm for the month-long campaign and show our appreciation for the volunteers who have agreed to help," Kitchen said.

This year, all University employees are invited to join employees from UNC Hospitals at an agency fair to be held on Oct. 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Commons Area of the Brinkhouse-Bullitt Building. The agency fair offers a good opportunity for people to get information about the various agencies and the projects they sponsor.

"I want to encourage faculty and staff to stop by the fair," Kitchen said. "It's the best way for people to obtain information and ask questions about where their money will go.

"Once employees understand what worthwhile projects their contributions will support, they will feel good about giving. More importantly, we really want to encourage employees to designate their gifts. We hope that employees will make a conscious decision about where they want their gift to go. By attending the agency fair and carefully reviewing the agencies listed in the campaign booklet, employees can designate their gifts where they feel it will do the most good."

Hospitals and medical school team up

UNC Hospitals and the School of Medicine are again joining forces this year for the State Employees Combined Campaign.

The hospitals/medical school campaign will run the same dates as the University effort. Plans are in the works for special kickoff events where these employees can enjoy free food, win prizes and get information on the participating agencies.

SECC captains have been appointed in both the hospitals and the School of Medicine to distribute information and recruit solicitors. In the upcoming weeks, employees will begin to see and hear more about the campaign.
