V. William Balthrop

Communications studies department chair and professor, Balthrop has been elected second vice president of the National Communication Association, in line to become vice president then president. He has taught courses at the business schools here and at Duke.

Rick Carroll, Natashia Satterwhite

Carroll, lithographic press operator at Printing Services, and Satterwhite, processing assistant III at UNC P & A Administration, received State Incentive bonuses from the Office of State Personnel for their cost-cutting ideas.

Carroll suggested the use of washable rags rather than disposable wipes for print clean up. Satterwhite's suggestion improved client toll-free telephone service.

Amelia F. Drake, Jiri Prazma, William W. Shockley

Surgery professors Shockley and Prazma and Associate Professor Drake have been recognized by the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.

Shockley has been named to the academy's board of directors. Prazma received a Presidential Citation for teaching research skills to residents and medical students. Drake was honored for her scientific presentations and continuing-education service.

Stuart L. Hart, James H. Johnson Jr.

Kenan-Flagler Business School professors Hart and Johnson have been named pioneers in preparing MBAs for social and environmental stewardship by the World Resources Institute and the Aspen Institute. The two were recognized for "reshaping business education to integrate environmental and social issues in corporate decision-making."

North Carolina Botanical Garden

The North Carolina Botanical Garden has won three awards from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to create a local botanical information center in collaboration with the herbarium, the School of Information and Library Science, McDougle Middle School and the Carrboro branch of the Orange County Library.

Hugh H. Tilson

Senior adviser at the School of Public Health, Tilson has received the highest award of the Public Health Foundation. He received the 1999 Theodore R. Ervin Award for Outstanding Service for his "creative vision, relentless commitment and unparalleled leadership."

Kim S. Ulrich

Clinical instructor for the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and case manager for the Craniofacial Center, Ulrich has been appointed to the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council of the National Institutes of Health.

Peter S. White

Director of the North Carolina Botanical Garden, White has been elected vice chair of the Directors' Advisory Council of the Center for Plant Conservation, a national coordinating organization for the conservation of the critically imperiled plants.
