Each of you makes a difference every single day when you come to campus. You make sure our students get the very best education. You keep them safe. You help house and feed them. You make sure Carolina provides an environment conducive to learning. You conduct the cutting-edge research that makes our society a better place, and you give generously of your services to the benefit of our state, nation and world.
That's a gracious plenty for any group of employees to give, but since the early 1990s, many of you have chosen to go a step further by contributing to the University Campaign. While that money cannot outweigh all that you give of yourself each day, it does make a great difference in the life of our University. Last year alone, some 1,700 employees gave more than $1.3 million to academics and programming at Carolina. Since the University Campaign began during our bicentennial, faculty and staff have contributed more than $10 million. This generosity isn't new; even before we began a formal campus campaign, many employees regularly designated gifts to the University.
Those numbers speak volumes. They tell of our employees' dedication and commitment to the University and its mission. They indicate that you're willing to give something back to make sure Carolina continues to grow and flourish. They demonstrate that you're absolutely convinced of the importance of this institution and the need for it to be the very best.
By opening your wallet to support Carolina, you're sending an unmistakable message to colleagues, students, legislators and other donors. You're saying that you believe that the University is a worthy investment and that you, one of its own employees, feel confident in the return on your money. How many companies or businesses can boast of such employee support and loyalty? Carolina is indeed blessed with a faculty and staff who care deeply about its needs.
As suggested by this year's theme, "Get in the Picture," the campaign is a way for you to become even more involved in the life of the University. Your gift can go far in helping Carolina become the nation's best public university. It can help attract top students by boosting scholarship coffers. It can help create vital new programming, build new facilities or renovate old ones. It can help provide new opportunities for colleagues in your department or help recruit and retain outstanding faculty members by bolstering endowed professorships. Ultimately, your dollars will enrich and enhance all that is so special about Carolina and help make sure that it is here for generations to come.
By the time you read this column, you should have received an informational packet about the University Campaign in the mail. It does a superb job of explaining how to contribute and why it's so very important. I hope you'll read the material carefully and decide that you can take this additional step and give a bit more back to the University. Gifts can be made by cash, check or payroll deduction through June 30.
To those of you who have contributed to the campaign in the past and those who will do so this year, my sincerest thanks. And to all of you who give to the University each day, in everything you do, my deepest appreciation.
