Rand lecture series features Renaissance art scholar


The fourth annual Bettie Allison Rand Lectures in Art History will feature renowned Renaissance art scholar David Rosand, Meyer Shapiro Professor of Art History at Columbia University in New York.

The four-part series entitled "Myths of Venice: The Figuration of a State," will be held March 14-19 and is free and open to the public.

This series explores the imagery of Venetian art from the mosaics of San Marco to the sculpture of Jacopo Sansovino and paintings by Bellini, Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto.

All lectures are in the Hanes Center Art Auditorium. The series begins Sunday, March 14, at 3 p.m., with "Miraculous Birth." It continues March 15 at 6 p.m. with "The Peace of Saint Mark"; March 17, 6 p.m. with "The Wisdom of Solomon"; and March 19, 6 p.m. with "Appropriation of Olympus." A reception follows the opening lecture March 14. Parking is available in the Swain Hall lot adjacent to the Hanes Art Building on Cameron Avenue.
