Fulbright Scholar grants given to four professors

Four University professors have been given Fulbright Scholar grants for international teaching and research this year.

The Fulbright Scholar Program awards grants to college and university faculty to conduct research, teach or study abroad. The program maintains that the contributions of Fulbright Scholars are key to developing and strengthening international programs at colleges and universities around the world, and that such experience adds a global, multicultural dimension to traditional college curricula.

The University faculty members selected are:

n William H. Dow, assistant professor in the health policy and administration department in the School of Public Health. He conducted research on Costa Rican national health insurance at the University of Costa Rica last fall.

n Soyini D. Madison, associate professor in the communication studies department. Madison currently is at the University of Ghana conducting research and lecturing on narrative and performance traditions in contemporary fiction.

n Severine Neff, a professor in the music department. Neff is at the Moscow State Conservatory lecturing on American music theory from 1955 to 1997.

n Mary C. Sturgeon, a professor in the art department, is conducting research and lecturing on the arts of Corinth in the Hellenistic Period. She will be at the University of Athens through May.

Recognized as the flagship program in international educational exchange, the Fulbright Program has awarded grants to nearly a quarter of a million people in its 50 years. It is sponsored and funded by the United States Information Agency. Participating governments and host institutions in the United States and abroad also provide funding support.
