Wilson Library is home to the new Charles Kuralt Collection.
Housed in the Southern Collection, the Kuralt Collection includes journalism school alumnus Ralph Grizzle's 60 oral histories of Kuralt as well as buttons, bumper stickers, letters, photos, audio and video tapes, and other artifacts from the famed broadcaster's career.
Carolina alumni Jim Babb of Charlotte and Gene and Saralyn Oberdorfer of Atlanta led friends of Kuralt to donate more than $75,000 to the library to help set up the new collection.
Carolina alumnus Kuralt, who died July 4, 1997, had retired from CBS News after hosting its popular "On the Road" segments and "Sunday Morning" show. North Carolina and CBS notables attended his memorial service on campus, and he was buried in the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery.
His family announced that the University would house his papers and encouraged the public to send the library letters, stories, photographs and memorabilia about Kuralt. Kuralt had discussed donating his materials to Carolina before his death. His will left everything to his widow, Suzanna, who gave Carolina most items in the new collection. It includes manuscripts, files on his books and TV shows, calendars, notebooks and souvenirs.
