* September: Chancellor's Task Force on Intellectual Climate issues report; Committee reviews Grounds Division grievances; Undergraduate courses offered online for first time

* December: LEARN North Carolina, an online resource for teachers, gets full-time director

1998

* February: Chancellor announces Carolina Computing Initiative

* May: Land-use master plan study begins

* June: Study begins on implications of future enrollment increase; Campus becomes Patch Adams movie set; Committee forms to study enrollment growth

* November: Departmental distribution of new computers begins

* December: Committee begins to explore uses for Horace Williams tract

1999

* January: Chancellor undergoes first treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

* April: Chancellor takes medical leave of absence, and William O. McCoy is named acting chancellor

* June: Chancellor returns to work June 1, dies June 29
