David R. Godschalk

Stephen Baxter professor of city and regional planning, Godschalk has been selected as a 1999 Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners. The nomination describes Godschalk as "the model scholar-planner: dedicated to teaching and mentoring his students; insightful and productive as a publishing scholar; respected as consultant and expert witness; influential in policy circles; and effective as a leader in university, town and state affairs as well as in our national professional and academic organizations."

Beth Holmgren

Associate professor of Slavic languages and literatures, Holmgren received the 1998 Waclaw Lednicki Humanities Award of the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in America for her recent book Rewriting Capitalism: Literature and the Market in Late Tsarist Russia and the Kingdom of Poland (University of Pittsburgh Press, 1998). The award is given annually for the best humanities book dealing with Polish culture.

Gary B. Mesibov

Psychiatry professor and director of TEACCH, Mesibov has received the Emily and Frank Puzio Award for leadership in improving the quality of life for individuals with autism. The prize recipient is selected each year by The Eden Institute, located in Princeton, N.J., and a steering committee from Princeton University.

Bland Simpson

Local author and creative writing professor, Simpson has won the Conservation Communicator of the Year Award from the North Carolina Wildlife Federation for his book Into the Sound Country: A Carolinian's Coastal Plain. The Conservation Communicator of the Year Award honors outstanding conservation effort within the communications profession to create a public awareness of the importance of wildlife and natural resources.
