With 1999 marking the centennial of Duke Ellington's birth, this year's Carolina Jazz Festival features concerts, workshops and jam sessions honoring the late genius.
The 22nd annual festival, which runs through Feb. 28, features performances by several of today's most promising and innovative jazz bands, including the Heath Brothers and the Kevin Mahogany Quintet.
Carolina musicians also will perform, as well as top high school and college bands and the N.C. Jazz Repertory Orchestra.
Several free concerts and events -- including the Feb. 26 seminar "Beyond Category: The Life, Works and Orchestra of Duke Ellington" -- also will be offered.
For a complete schedule of remaining festival events, see the "Entertainment" section of this issue's Gazette calendar.
Tickets are on sale at the Carolina Union Box Office. Call 2-1449 for more information.
