Keeping up with the University's ongoing master plan effort is now a bit easier, thanks to a new web site.
The master plan site provides a way for faculty, staff and students to both see the plan's latest developments as well as submit ideas that the consultants could use.
"It [the site] will make sure that all the information and maps from the consultants are instantly available at the fingertips of everybody on campus and in town," said Linda Convissor, master plan coordinator for the University.
Plans also are in the works to have the master plan design studio be opened periodically so that people can come by and view master plan maps and drawings, Convissor said. The design studio is in the downstairs classroom of Morehead Planetarium.
The architectural firm of Ayers Saint Gross is leading the master planning process, an effort scheduled to continue through most of 1999.
So far the master plan has led to a "concept plan," a term the consultants use to mean general themes and a rough sketch that they will follow through their work. A color version of that rough sketch is available on the web site.
The master planning effort has settled into what Ayers Saint Gross labels the "precinct phase." That's where the campus is divided into four sections and the consultants examine each section -- or precinct -- in closer detail. They do this with help from people from the various schools and departments located in the precinct as well as campus planners, utilities experts and facilities planners.
Work is nearly completed on precinct one, which covers the western side of campus.
The consultants will return Feb. 23-25, when they will start work on precinct four, which includes everything south of South Road and west of Kenan Stadium and the new health affairs parking decks.
