Carolina Kids Camp 1999 registration

Parents are urged to apply by March 5 for this year's edition of the Carolina Kids Summer Recreation Program, a day camp for children ages 5 to 12 of permanent University employees, students and UNC Hospitals employees.

Campers will enjoy sports, swimming, games, arts and crafts in Fetzer Gym, as well as go on field trips. Activities are supervised by experienced, college-aged counselors. The camp will be held in five sessions between June 14 and Aug. 6, Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Some scholarship assistance is available.

This summer Carolina will host Special Olympic events during the week of June 28-July 2, which overlaps the camp's second session. As a result Carolina Kids will not be able to use the Fetzer gym area, and the camp will be moved to the Outdoor Education Center on campus for that week and feature outdoor activities. Space limitations at the center prohibit a large camp, so session 2 enrollment will be limited to 35 children, ages 9-12 only.

Because of the camp's popularity, parents are encouraged to submit applications to the Office of Human Resources, Employee Services, by March 5 to be included in a lottery for session space assignment.

Camp brochures with complete schedules, cost and registration information have been mailed to human resources facilitators and 1998 camp families. Program details and application forms may also be obtained from the Employee Services web page (http://www.ais.unc.edu/hr/es/kidscamp.htm) or by calling Employee Services at 2-1483.

The camp is offered by Employee Services in cooperation with the Department of Physical Education, Exercise, and Sports Science.

Dental insurance enrollment

The 1999 annual enrollment period for the Fortis Dental Insurance Program will run through Feb. 26.

During that period, eligible employees not enrolled in the program may enroll themselves and eligible dependents (spouse and unmarried child/children under 19 or up to 25 if full-time student). Employees already in the program may add eligible dependents. Monthly rates, effective through Dec. 1999: employee only, $24.30; employee and spouse, $45.34; employee and child/children, $46.57; and employee, spouse and child/children, $67.83.

Employees not now enrolled who choose to enroll must get an application form from the Benefits Department. Enrolled employees need not do anything unless they want to add dependents, in which case they should get a request-a-change form from the Benefits Department by calling 2-3071 or 558-5050 or e-mailing Benefits@unc.edu

All forms must be returned to the Benefits Department at 725 Airport Road (CB# 1045) by 5 p.m. Feb. 26.

Information sessions on the dental plan will be held:

  • Feb. 10, 10-11 a.m., Room 3200 of Bowles Building;
  • Feb. 16, 3-4 p.m., Room 150 of 725 Airport Road; and
  • Feb. 18, 9-10 a.m., Room 210 of student union.

State retirement changes

The following summarizes legislation enacted by the 1998 session of the General Assembly that affects the Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS):

  • TSERS members may now purchase credit for probationary employment with a local government. The credit may be purchased by paying the full actuarial cost.
  • Contributory death benefit for retired members increases from $5,000 to $6,000 if the death of the covered retired member occurs on or after January 1, 1999.
  • Transferred service credits from the Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System now may be included when determining when a member of TSERS becomes eligible to purchase service credits for active military service.
  • TSERS members may now purchase service credits for service rendered as a local governmental employee, credit for part-time local governmental service in TSERS and credit for full-time temporary local governmental employment in TSERS.
  • Employer percentage contribution rate to be applied to members' covered payroll for the 1998-99 fiscal year changes to 10.1 percent with 7.42 percent of this total payable to TSERS, 0.16 percent payable to the Death Benefit Trust, 0.52 percent payable to the Disability Income Plan and 2 percent payable to a reserve to fund the cost of retirees' state health plan coverage. For state-employed law enforcement officers, an additional amount equal to 5 percent of each officer's compensation is payable to the Supplemental Retirement Income Plan.
