Pharmacy school provides care at Kerr Drug store

A new-style pharmacy based on establishing close relationships -- and co-sponsored by the School of Pharmacy and Kerr Drug -- has opened in Chapel Hill.

The newly founded practice, Enhanced Pharmaceutical Care Center, located in the Kerr Drug store at University Mall is pioneering "pharmaceutical care."

The goal is for pharmacists to decrease dramatically drug-

related illnesses and deaths by establishing individual relationships with patients and taking responsibility for their care.

The center provides help for patients with long-term or chronic health problems who take several medications. It offers blood pressure checks, bone-density and glaucoma tests and a variety of other screenings.

The center is staffed 20 hours weekly by Kerr Drug pharmacists and another 20 hours by pharmacy school faculty members, with pharmacy school students also volunteering. Patients pay for some services they receive.

An upcoming event at the center includes an osteoporosis screening and bone mineral density testing April 30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a fee.

For more information, call the center at 918-7595.
