On March 24, WUNC-FM began broadcasting on a low-power station in Manteo and on March 25 it began transmitting on WRQM-FM (90.9 FM) in Rocky Mount. A third station in Buxton, on the Outer Banks, hit the airwaves the first week of April.
WUNC-FM officials were approached last fall by the Board of Directors of Down East Public Radio to assist in providing continued public radio service to the Rocky Mount, Wilson and Greenville areas. WRQM-FM in Rocky Mount will air portions of WUNC-FM's broadcast at first, but by October, the license should be transferred to Carolina as part of an agreement with the University, WUNC-FM and the Friends of Down East Public Radio.
The addition of the three stations will boost WUNC's listening area to 23 counties in central and eastern North Carolina with a potential audience of more than 500,000.
WUNC, which has won numerous awards for journalistic and programming excellence, receives a higher level of financial support from listeners than any other station of its market size in the country. Listener contributions account for more than 70 percent of the station's annual operating budget.
