The newly refurbished Kessing Pool officially opened June 12. Chancellor
Michael Hooker (right) and young Oliver Owen Kessing IV cut the ribbon during
the dedication ceremony while Oliver's grandfather Jonas Kessing looks on.
Oliver is the great grandson of Commodore Owen Kessing for whom the pool is
named. The pool first opened in 1943 and served as a center for one of the
U.S. Navy's pre-flight divisions in World War II. Former President George Bush
trained at the center. The pool has been closed to the public since 1991.
Renovations began in fall 1997. Kessing is open Monday-Friday, noon-2 p.m. and
5-8 p.m.; Saturday, noon-6 p.m.; and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. A gym-pool privilege
card is needed. For more information, call 2-2268.
