The University named its first Truman Capote Scholars, making Carolina one of
the few schools nationally to award scholarships from the Truman Capote Library
Trust.
The late author established the trust to give prizes for literary criticism
and to fund scholarships for promising young creative writers. Last December
the trust awarded the University a grant that will allow the creative writing
program to award grants for the next three years.
This year a committee from the creative writing program decided to award
$2,500 to rising seniors Mary K. Bryson of Waynesville and Joy Renee Greico of
Manteo.
