KENAN-FLAGLER BUSINESS SCHOOL
Seven faculty and staff were recognized for exceptional teaching, research and service at the school's 12th annual Weatherspoon Awards Banquet. The recipients, who were honored with $6,000 awards, are:
Wendell Gilland, operations management professor--Undergraduate Teaching Award;
John Hand, accounting professor--Master of Accounting Program Teaching Award;
Mark Lang, accounting professor--Master of Business Administration Program Teaching Award;
Marc Zenner, finance professor--Ph.D. Teaching Award;
Clay Whybark, operations management professor--Distinguished Research Award;
Pat McIntyre, finance manager--Kenan-Flagler Staff Exceptional Performance Award; and
Jean Elia, associate director of the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise--Roy W. Holsten Exceptional Service Award.
At the awards banquet, Van and Kay Weatherspoon announced their intention to increase their endowment to provide $10,000 for award recipients beginning in 1999.
PRINCIPALS' EXECUTIVE PROGRAM
Robert Phay
Kenan professor of political science Phay was honored for his 14 years of service as director of the Principals' Executive Program at an April banquet. Speakers included former state legislator Anne Barnes, Provost Richard J. Richardson and Michael Smith, director of the Institute of Government. Phay now is responsible for creating World View, a new program of international education and liberal arts in the University Center for International Studies.
SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY
Mitsuo Yamauchi
Professor of periodontology and director of the Collagen Biochemistry Laboratory, Yamauchi recently was installed as the first Sunstar Distinguished Professor of Oral Biology. Sunstar Inc., based in Osaka, Japan, manufactures oral, hair and skin care products and donated $333,000 to the dental school in 1996, enabling the University to qualify for an additional $167,000 from the state's Distinguished Professors Endowment Fund to establish a $500,000 endowment.
Theodore Roberson
For the second time in his 30 years on the faculty, Roberson, professor in the department of operative dentistry, received the school's most prestigious award, the Richard F. Hunt Excellence in Predoctoral Teaching Award. The award is given each year to recognize an outstanding educator who exhibits a command of the subject matter, an interest in students as individuals and an understanding of dentistry.
SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
Christopher C. Fordham III
Former chancellor of the University and dean emeritus of the School of Medicine, Fordham received a 1998 Distinguished Service Award from the school. Fordham was recognized for his contributions to the school, the University and the state. The service awards were established in 1955 to recognize alumni and friends whose distinguished careers and selfless contributions to society have brought honor to the University and the school.
Robert A. Briggaman
Professor and chair of dermatology, Briggaman was awarded the 1998 Distinguished Faculty Award. The award recognizes excellence in teaching, contributions to medicine, leadership in continuing medical education and efforts to improve communication among alumni, faculty and North Carolina residents.
SCHOOL OF NURSING
Sandra Burroughs
Administrative assistant for continuing education, Burroughs won the school's first Outstanding Staff of the Year Award. She was described by nominators as having a "can do" attitude, doing whatever it takes to get the job done and who, in the past year, worked to overcome staffing difficulties, including "training" a new supervisor. The honor comes with a $150 cash award.
