Organizers of "Fall Fest '98" want all University departments, services and
organizations to participate in this year's rendition of the alcohol-free
festival.
Each department is encouraged to have a booth at Fall Fest. Also, faculty and
staff members are needed as volunteers to make the event run smoothly, said Don
Luse, Student Union director and chair of the Fall Fest Committee.
"Fall Fest '98" will be held on Aug. 16 and aims to top last year's inaugural
event, which drew more than 5,000 students.
The festival will run from 9 p.m. to
1 a.m., Luse said, and will feature free food and entertainment. South Road
will be closed so that Fall Fest can occupy the street between the Frank Porter
Graham Student Union and the Student Recreation Center.
Fall Fest started in 1997 as a way to encourage students to have an
alcohol-free celebration to start the school year.
Not only did the first Fall Fest succeed in drawing larger-than-expected
crowds, Luse said, but there were no student alcohol violations that night.
Fall Fest boasts not only trailers distributing free soft drinks and food and
three stages of entertainment, but also features dozens of booths along South
Road. This is where academic and service departments can set up booths to let
students know about a program of study, a service organization or any other
campus group.
"We want to extend to any University department the opportunity to tell who
they are, what they are, certainly in a fun and interactive way, " Luse said.
Luse said Fall Fest booths are similar in intent to those set up at the annual
Employee Appreciation Fair, only Fall Fest targets students.
"We have plenty of room for all University departments to participate," Luse
said.
Organizers want to create a carnival atmosphere where students can win prizes
at each booth, Luse said. To create such an atmosphere, they hope each booth
will feature its own game with the idea being that students who win the game
get to include their name in the drawing for prizes.
Luse said there would be plenty of prizes to win.
Volunteers are crucial to making Fall Fest work, Luse said. Volunteers are
needed from 3 p.m. to 4 a.m. to help set up, to distribute food and soda and to
clean up.
"It's not a lot of glamorous work, but it's important," Luse said. "Even
distributing drinks for an hour helps."
