Appointments, volunteer slots available for July 29 blood drive

There's still time to roll up your sleeve for a good cause.

The 10th annual campuswide blood drive will be July 29 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Dean E. Smith Center.

As of July 1, more than 600 people had made appointments to give blood--which is ahead of last year's pace--but more will be needed to reach the drive's goal of 1,000 pints.

Making an appointment

Departmental recruiters should have contacted prospective donors by now to schedule appointments. But if you haven't heard from anyone, call Katrina Coble at 2-1801 or Lucy Piner at 2-8210 to find out your recruiter's name. Employees also may make an appointment by calling 96BLOOD or just dialing BLOOD

(2-5663) from within the University.

Appointments are available between 7 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. Time spent donating is considered work time if taken during normal work hours. Employees may call to make an appointment through 5 p.m., July 28.

The drive is not limited to University employees. Family members, neighbors and

friends are welcome to participate as well. To celebrate the drive's 10th anniversary, all donors will get a T-shirt sporting the anniversary logo. The theme of the drive is "Ten Years of Giving ... Countless Years of Life." UNC Student Stores provided financial support for T-shirts.

Volunteering

Along with donors, the drive needs volunteers to help the event run smoothly. Volunteer tasks will include greeting donors and helping with check-in, assisting with decorations, escorting donors from one location to another in the Smith Center and working in the canteen area--where donors receive snacks for an energy boost.

Volunteers still are needed for shifts from 7 to 9:30 a.m. and from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Employees may volunteer by e-mail to blood98@unc.edu They also may call the drive's volunteer coordinators, Ann Hamner, 6-7291, or Bob Schreiner, 6-3942. Volunteers may donate blood, probably best done at the completion of work shifts.
