The family of former chancellor J. Carlyle Sitterson has created the J.
Carlyle Sitterson Freshman Teaching Award to recognize outstanding teaching by
tenured or tenure-track faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences.
The Sitterson family chose to honor those faculty who teach freshmen because
that was something the former chancellor loved to do.
"Lyle loved teaching, and when his term as chancellor ended he immediately
began teaching freshman seminars," said Nancy Sitterson, his widow. "Those were
the happiest years of his career."
