The University's page on the World Wide Web made the Top 10 among academe's
web sites in May.
An estimated 1 million people signed on to http://www.unc.edu, tying the
University with Carnegie Mellon and Stanford universities for seventh place.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology topped the list with 1.9 million
visitors.
The rankings are compiled by RelevantKnowledge, a company that uses methods
similar to the techniques used by Nielsen Media Research, which compiles
television ratings based on the viewing habits of its "Nielsen families."
The other schools finishing ahead of Carolina were: the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Michigan, which tied for second at
1.8 million visitors; the University of Washington and the University of Texas
at Austin, with 1.3 million; and Harvard University with 1.1 million.
