In his comments at a July 1 Employee Forum meeting, Chancellor Michael Hooker
said that with the exception of salaries, the University fared "very well" in
the N.C. Senate's proposed 1998-99 budget.
Hooker cited the Senate's support for graduate students as an example of good
news in the budget proposal. Carolina would receive $2.8 million for graduate
students.
But the chancellor cautioned against getting "too exited" about the Senate
budget, given that the state House of Representatives still is working on the
spending plan. He said it would be unrealistic for the House to propose raises
higher than those passed by the Senate.
Hooker also noted that while at first blush the Senate proposal salary hikes
might seem slim, they are competitive with current inflation rates.
Many officials had hoped an expected state budget surplus would mean higher
raises for University employees, but a $799 million settlement with retired
state and federal employees who sued the state over taxation of retirement
benefits ate into available dollars. Half of the settlement will come out of
the 1998-99 budget.
