POETIC GESTURE Chancellor Michael Hooker (second from left) receives a copy of the 1996 Commencement Address delivered by Seamus Heaney, an Irish poet and Nobel laureate. The copy is one of 100 signed by Heaney. Handing it to Hooker is Weldon Thorton, the William R. and Jeanne H. Jordan professor of English. Looking on are George Lensing, professor of English (left), and Charles McNamara (right), curator of the Rare Book Room. Hooker's copy will go to the Rare Book Room while the other 99 signed copies, and 400 unsigned copies, will be sold for $200 and $100, respectively, with proceeds going to the University. |
