Moore named Carolina's chief information officer

Bringing private sector and academic experience to UNC

Marian G. Moore, a top-level manager with the world-renowned software company SAS Institute, has been named chief information officer. She assumed her new duties this week.

As chief information officer, Moore will be responsible for managing the University's extensive information technology systems. These duties include developing and implementing plans and standards for deploying information and communication technologies to support the University's mission of teaching, research and public service.

A manager with years of experience directing corporate and university technology systems, Moore has been charged with fostering the planning of information technology investment and management at all levels of the University.

Moving ahead

This new position was created after the University merged its telecommunications and academic and administrative computing units last year to meet more effectively the campus's new and growing technology needs. Moore, recruited after a national search, will be the University's first permanent director.

"We are delighted with the extensive expertise and strong leadership Marian will bring to the position," said Chancellor Michael Hooker. "Her combination of private sector and academic experience and her diverse management skills will move our comprehensive information technology system into the 21st century. Marian has what it takes to employ emerging technologies for our benefit and place UNC at the cutting edge.

"We were extremely lucky to have had Dr. William Graves serve as interim chief information officer while we conducted a national search," Hooker said. "He was the glue that helped bind our information technology units into a cohesive package."

Graves, a professor of mathematics, longtime administrator and founding director of UNC's Institute for Academic Technology, will continue to work with the University in the areas of technology, research and development.

Moore will work closely with advisory groups representing clients and special technology interests at Carolina's schools, colleges, libraries and administrative units, and represent the University's technology interests to the public.

Extensive experience

Moore is expected to lead the University to the next stage in its technological development--the convergence of available technology for seamless access to information and computational resources.

Born in Memphis, Tenn., and reared in Columbus, Ohio, Moore comes to Carolina with extensive technology experience. Most recently, she was a senior manager in the research and development division at SAS Institute in Cary, where she was responsible for the operating system layer of the SAS System.

Employed at the institute since 1989, Moore previously was the manager of the company's distributed systems support, where she was responsible for the hardware and software support, purchase and maintenance of all nonmainframe systems and computer networks. Her department had a $20 million budget and supported 1,700 Unix workstations and 500 personal computers on a worldwide network used by all divisions at SAS Institute.

Previously, Moore served as executive director of information technology at Boston University, where she oversaw a $3 million budget, 44 full-time staff members and 70 part-time student employees. She was responsible for all aspects of consulting, systems programming, computer operations and scientific programming for 22,000 users.

Moore also has managed computer systems at Wells Fargo Bank and Yale and Ohio State universities. She holds a bachelor's and master's degree in computer and information science from Ohio State.
