W.D. `Dub' White dies

W.D. "Dub" White, research professor in the Department of Social Medicine since 1993, died last month. He was 74.

His scholarly interests included the works of John Henry Newman and John Milton, Victorian studies, black American writers, the modern novel and medical ethics.

His teaching career spanned five decades. Before coming to Carolina, he taught at Baylor and Duke universities and St. Andrews Presbyterian College, where he remained for 28 years.

Colleagues described White as a "courtly Southerner with a liberal mind ... an unparalleled blend of scholarship, faith, compassion, audacity and wit," said Larry Churchill, professor and chairman of social medicine.

"Dr. White embraced students in a way that was personally respectful and affirming, yet intellectually challenging," Churchill said. "One of his singular skills was an ability to engage students with the best in themselves and to guide them toward self-recognition as wonderfully complex and graceful creatures."

Donations may be made to Triangle Hospice at The Meadowlands, 1001 Corporate Drive, Hillsborough 27278.
