Howes

to tackle community affairs

Jonathan Howes, secretary of the N.C. Department of Environment, Health and Natural Resources since January 1993, will return to the University Aug. 15 to serve as the main liaison with the local community.

Howes, who will step down from his state post on Aug. 1, will become director of university outreach, reporting to the associate vice chancellor for public relations in the Division of University Advancement.

He will serve as a special assistant to the chancellor for local government relations and will be the University's liaison to Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Orange County governing boards. He also will hold adjunct teaching posts in the Department of City and Regional Planning.

Howes was director of the Center for Urban and Regional Studies from 1970 until he was tapped by the Hunt administration to serve as secretary. He also was a faculty member in the Department of City and Regional Planning and in the Curriculum in Public Policy.
