Thomas J. Bacon has been named director of the N.C. Area Health Education Centers Program based at the School of Medicine, effective June 1. He also will serve as associate dean of the medical school and holds a faculty appointment in the School of Public Health's Department of Health Policy and Administration.
AHEC provides community-based education for a variety of health professionals across the state. Nine regional AHECs are affiliated with one of the state's four academic medical centers: Bowman Gray, Duke, East Carolina and UNC-Chapel Hill.
Bacon has served as executive director of the Mountain AHEC in Asheville since 1982. For five years before that, he served as associate director of AHEC's central office in Chapel Hill.
Bacon has a keen interest in rural health-care needs. He has spoken and written extensively on how the AHEC program helps underserved communities address those needs.
