New scholarship created in journalism school

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication has received a $25,000 gift from Capital Cities/ABC Inc.--through its Durham affiliate, WTVD NewsChannel 11--to support the school's electronic communication sequence.

The Capital Cities/ABC Fund for Excellence will provide at least $1,250 annually for scholarships, awards, travel and research, and to buy audio and video equipment.

"Capital Cities/ABC and WTVD have provided tremendous support for the school throughout the years," said Dean Richard Cole.

The gift, the third endowed fund from Capital Cities/ABC and WTVD, is part of the school's campaign to raise money to renovate Carroll Hall, the school's new home starting in 1998. The school has raised about $1.3 million in private funds so far to renovate the building, which will triple the space the school now has in Howell Hall.
