Six land in top 10, with library science 2nd
Ten University graduate programs and specialty areas rank among the top 25 nationwide, with six in the top 10, according to Monday's U.S. News & World Report magazine.
In the magazine's first ranking of library science programs, Carolina tied for second with the University of Michigan.
Programs in journalism and mass communication also were ranked for the first time. Carolina's print program placed fourth; public relations, fifth; and advertising, seventh. The overall rankings are based on a survey of deans and leading faculty.
The magazine conducted a separate reputational survey of journalism practitioners in print, broadcast, public relations and advertising. While the response was too low for the results to be statistically significant, the magazine listed the School of Journalism and Mass Communication's advertising and print programs as among the top five cited most often for their high quality.
Among doctoral science programs, chemistry placed 15th overall, with its analytical specialty ranking second. Computer science ranked 18th overall, with a tie for second place in user-
interaction graphics with Brown and Carnegie Mellon universities. UNC's biological sciences program ranked 25th. The doctoral science programs were judged based on scholarship, curriculum and quality of faculty and graduate students.
The Kenan-
Flagler Business School's graduate program placed 17th overall, up from 18th last year. Recruiters rated the program 11th and academics listed it 16th. The program was 15th best based on placement success. Graduate business programs were judged on student selectivity, placement success and reputation.
The School of Education was ranked 32nd overall, but in reputational surveys of school superintendents and academics it placed sixth and 16th, respectively. The School of Law, listed 34th overall, ranked l9th in a survey of lawyers and judges and 20th in a poll of academics.
Several other programs across campus have been rated highly in recent years by the magazine. Those rankings, as well as the new ones released this week, will be featured in the magazine's 1997 graduate school guide, which goes on sale March 26.
