Campaign off to `great start'

"It's a great start," said Rachel Windham, co-chair of the campaign. "I expect an excellent response from my fellow employees because it is a chance to invest in our future."

Andi Sobbe, director of the Carolina Annual Fund, said all employees should have received their information on the University Campaign by now. Gifts and pledges tallied in the first few days, Sobbe said, showed the following patterns:

*Gifts have ranged in size from $5 to $1,200.

*About half of all staff and faculty donors to date have given to their own department or school.

*About 75 percent are using payroll deduction, the most convenient way to give for most donors.

*Many donors are splitting their gifts two-to-four ways, typically between their home department and another unit that supports their work, such as the library, or that enriches their life outside of work, such as WUNC-FM, the Morehead Planetarium, Ackland Art Museum, North Carolina Botanical Garden, PlayMakers and H.E.E.L.S. for health.

*The Sonja Haynes Stone Black Cultural Center has received a particularly strong response.

*Departments and schools that publicized a priority also have seen a response, for example, a recently created staff award in the School of Public Health.

Sobbe urged interested employees who have not yet made their gifts to do so before April 10 if they want to be included in the honor roll with the 1,500 employees who are already giving on a regular basis. The honor roll will be published in the Gazette.
