Leading U.S. researchers including Francis S. Collins, director of the National Center for Human Genome Research, will examine the latest advances in cancer genetics April 1-2 at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center's 20th annual symposium, "New Insights into the Genetic Basis of Cancer." The free public symposium will be held at the Friday Center.
"Scientists have long felt that genetic susceptibility plays a major role in the development of human cancer," said Bernard E. Weissman, symposium chair and a member of the Lineberger center's molecular carcinogenesis program.
April 1 sessions include "Basic Genetics--Alterations and Modifications of DNA" and "Genetics of Cell Control," followed by a poster session, reception and banquet at the Kenan Center. The April 2 session, "The Search for Novel Genetic Mechanisms," will highlight other advances in human cancer genetics.
The symposium is free, but pre-registration assures seating. The reception and the banquet cost $20 and is free for graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. For more information, call 6-3036.
