Conference examines market approval for drugs

More than 200 government officials, drug-industry representatives and academics from a dozen countries will examine factors that determine how new drugs go to market during "Efficacy Versus Effectiveness: Approval for the Market or by the Market," March 31-April 2 at the Carolina Inn.

"The goal of this one-of-a-kind conference is to analyze in depth the scientific evidence that supports decisions about efficacy and effectiveness," said Abraham G. Hartzema, professor and director of the School of Pharmacy's Center for Pharmaceutical Outcomes.

Presenters will include officials from the Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Senate Labor and Human Relations Committee, the National Institutes of Health, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, United States Pharmacopeia and Pan American Health Organization.

The conference is organized by the Center for Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research. Sponsors are the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology, the schools of Pharmacy and Public Health, and Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research.
