Faculty and staff may want to wait to sign up for BellSouth's new Universe City PPP service until bugs have been ironed out this summer.
The Office of Information Technology and BellSouth have identified several unresolved issues with the new service, said Dan Wingate. associate director of the Office of Information Technology-Services.
"We therefore recommend you subscribe only if you are very knowledgeable about Internet protocol requirements and feel comfortable with modifying scripts," he said. "Although the service is operational, our recommendation that you delay subscribing should reduce the frustration associated with a new service that is not optimal or supportable on a large scale."
The technical support that can be provided by OIT or BellSouth will be limited until several problems are resolved, Wingate said. They range from registration page errors and connection script problems to the lack of easy-to-use software, but most of these should be ironed out this summer.
Additional information about the Universe City service is available through OIT's home page "http://help.unc.edu/oit".
"We feel that the BellSouth Universe City Dial-Up IP service will in time be the best option for our campus community," Wingate said. "We, like BellSouth, are committed to providing a quality service and are working hard to accomplish this goal."
