Raul Alfonsin, former president of Argentina, will discuss politics in his country at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Morehead Banquet Hall. The talk is sponsored by the Duke-UNC Program in Latin American Studies.
Alfonsin's March 24-29 visit is part of a series presented by the Program in Latin American Studies focusing on presidential leadership and government reform in Latin America. Alfonsin is the second former president of a Latin American country to visit the campuses this spring. Alfonsin, who was Argentina's president from 1983-1989, helped bring the military under civilian control, cut the military budget and encouraged civilians to gain expertise in security issues. When he left office, it marked the first time a democratically elected official in Argentina handed over power to another democratically elected official who was a member of an opposition party.
