Metzguer aids disaster relief

Karen Metzguer, assistant professor of pediatrics specializing in the newborn, last month gave a week of her time to staff a temporary Red Cross headquarters in Harrisburg, Pa.

A Red Cross disaster relief volunteer for the past three years, this time Metzguer worked to aid victims of the devastating floods that recently hit the mid-Atlantic.

"I was assigned to staff health, a part of processing volunteers who came in from 48 states," she said. "Our job was to orient the volunteers, get them their assignments, brief them, give theme expense money and health checks, and send them on their way."

Volunteers went from the Harrisburg facility to staff more than 35 relief centers across Pennsylvania.
