Public health videoconference wins award

The School of Public Health won first place in the teleconference category of the National Association of Government Communicators' International Gold Screen Awards for its role in "Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine Preventable Diseases."

The four-module videoconference was uplinked live from the W. Fred Mayes Telecommunications Center and broadcast to more than 500 sites nationwide over the Public Health Training Network in January, February and March 1995.

About 15,000 health-care personnel from 47 states, including North Carolina, participated in the course, designed to teach participants to recognize and eliminate missed opportunities to vaccinate patients in their clinics and offices. Participants interacted with William Atkinson, medical epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, via toll-free phone lines.

The program was a collaborative effort among several organizations, including the School of Public Health; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Division of Media and Training Services, National Immunization Program and Public Health Training Network; N.C. Department of Environment, Health and Natural Resources; and the Association of Schools of Public Health.

Strong interest prompted organizers to repeat the course last summer, with additional broadcasts scheduled for this year.
