For the first time in five years, the State Employees Combined Campaign in Orange County made its goal. In fact, it surpassed the $500,000 goal by nearly 6 percent.
University faculty and staff contributed $435,689--or 82 percent--of the $528,156 raised in the October 1995 campaign. Thirty percent of University employees contributed to the campaign, giving 17 percent more money than in 1994.
Rounding out the local campaign were donations of $12,700 from UNC General Administration and $79,767 from UNC Hospitals.
"We set an ambitious goal, and our volunteers and employees came through," said local campaign chairman Matt Kupec, associate vice chancellor for development. "Carolina faculty and staff generously supported organizations that make life better for people in our community and around the world."
The once-a-year statewide fund raiser for local, national and international charitable organizations this year included 289 agencies for which employees could earmark their contributions.
More than 300 volunteers worked as vice chairs, area coordinators and solicitors for "A Moment of Sharing ... A Lifetime of Caring," the theme for this year's campaign.
Twenty-three departments qualified for the campaign's gold award, given in areas that had 85 percent employee participation with average gifts of $65 a person, while 29 qualified for the silver award, recognizing 65 percent participation and average gifts of $50.
