Machine shreds plastic bottles for recycling

Don't discard your plastic soda and water bottles, those with a #1 code on the bottom. Now you can feed them into a "reverse vending" machine located inside the Student Union snack bar and have them shredded into reusable plastic shavings.

Recycled PET #1--or polyethylene terephthalate--can be used for things such as carpets, clothing, cassette tapes and new PET containers.

Carolina was chosen as one of four sites for this pilot project, initiated by Sunshares, a Durham-based nonprofit recycling organization; NAPCOR, a leading plastic recycling company; and the University's Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling.

For information, call Sara Helm, environmental education coordinator, 2-4440.

Ruth Justice, Union Station manager, puts a plastic bottle in for shredding.
