San Francisco 49ers tackle and alumnus Harris Barton has given the School of Social Work $100,000 to support its programs for families. A conference room in the school's new building was named in honor of Barton's late father, Paul C Barton, who died in 1994 of brain cancer.
"Harris' gift will touch families all over North Carolina and the South," said Chancellor Michael Hooker. "With his support, University faculty members will be spending more time out in North Carolina's communities working with families to address problems facing us all."
Barton's gift will benefit programs in the School of Social Work's new interdisciplinary Institute for Families, designed to bring together experts from different fields in a holistic approach to problems ranging from youth violence to elder care.
