The School of Journalism and Mass Communication has established two new scholarships worth $2,500 per year for students in the school's electronic communication sequence, preferably with a career interest in radio.
John Boy and Billy Inc., merchandising company of the syndicated John Boy and Billy Big Show, will contribute at least $5,000 annually for the next decade to fund the scholarships. The first scholarships were awarded Monday at the school's annual honors lunch.
Dean Richard Cole said the school greatly appreciated the scholarship.
"John Boy and Billy are known all over the Southeast," Cole said. "Maybe the scholarship winners will come to be, too. We're exceedingly grateful for the gift."
The John Boy and Billy partnership began about 15 years ago on WBCY in Charlotte, where John Boy had been doing his own morning show. The two created a variety of characters for their show, including Hoyt and Delbert; The Reverend and Goober; Mad Max; Miss Depesto and Murray the agent.
