Hoechst Celanese helps minorities seek science careers

The Department of Chemistry has received a three-year, $120,000 grant from Hoechst Celanese Corp. to support two outstanding minority graduate students in chemistry. The Joseph H. Patterson Graduate Scholarships, named for the company's recently retired deputy chairman, pay $20,000 a year per student.

The scholarships should not only attract more black students into the chemistry doctoral program, but also better prepare them for science careers, said Joseph Templeton, acting associate dean for program administration in the College of Arts and Sciences and former chair of the department.

Selected fellows work closely with a faculty member, gaining hands-on experience in teaching and research, Templeton said, as they serve as mentors to undergraduates and role models for younger students through outreach activities.
