Moye W. Freymann, professor emeritus of health policy and administration and first director of the Carolina Population Center, died last month at age 70.
Freymann, a faculty member from 1966 until 1995, was known worldwide for teaching and research on population policy and related topics. His work in the United States stressed development of better measurement methods to help solve population problems.
"Moye Freymann created one of the world's leading population studies centers ... by stimulating and nurturing scholars in all sectors of the University and by helping to link their scholarship to the pressing issues of population growth, not only in North Carolina, but on every continent," said C. Arden Miller, former vice chancellor for health sciences and professor of maternal and child health.
H. Garland Hershey, vice provost for health affairs, called Freymann an innovative and original thinker.
"In particular, his ties to the international community brought outstanding scholars and programs to Chapel Hill and enhanced University exposure around the world," Hershey said.
Memorials be made to the Moye Wicks Freymann Fund, which will support student trainees from developing countries, at the Carolina Population Center, CB# 8120.
