Carolina Speakers generates scholarship income

State civic groups whose members have enjoyed popular presentations by experts through the Carolina Speakers program have given something back to the University.

Contributions totaling $4,500 initiated by the civic groups will create scholarships next fall for needy North Carolina students with strong academic records.

Begun during the Bicentennial Observance, the speakers bureau matches 70 top volunteer faculty members with audiences statewide. Professors discuss more than 100 topics ranging from country music to genetics, cyberspace to anthropology, the changing South to global politics. This fiscal year, 273 programs are scheduled in 68 N.C. counties.

Speakers' visits are free and the University uses private funds to pay travel expenses. But a small number of clubs with budgets for a speaker honorarium or travel expenses have sent contributions to the program ranging from $25 to $600.

As the gift total grew, director Anne Repp approached Eleanor S. Morris, director of scholarships and student aid, about creating the Carolina Speakers Scholarship Fund. The Office of Scholarships and Student Aid will award three scholarships valued at $1,500 each to N.C. freshmen for the 1996-97 academic year.
