More listeners tuned in WUNC-FM last fall than ever before, which station officials attribute to changes in programming and scheduling. The figures were released by Arbitron, a service that monitors radio use.
"The fact that our audience is growing tells me that [WUNC-FM] is serving our listeners' needs better than we did previously," said Sheila Rue, program director.
WUNC-FM listeners increased throughout the day, the figures report, with strong performance during morning and evening "drive-times," when the station broadcasts the National Public Radio news programs "Morning Edition," "Talk of the Nation" and "All Things Considered."
Rue said she was most satisfied with the performance of the station during mid-day, historically a problem time for WUNC-FM.
WUNC is the National Public Radio affiliate licensed to the University in 1953. The 100,000-watt station serves more than 150,000 people in 16 central N.C. counties 20 hours each day.
