UNC program receives funding for breast cancer screening

A UNC cancer-screening program has received a 1995 Avon Breast Health Access Fund Award and $20,000 to promote regular mammograms among N.C. women. The program was one of 19 recipients selected from 255 applicants nationwide for the one-year award.

The N.C. Breast Cancer Screening Program targets women in five eastern counties--Beaufort, Bertie, Martin, Tyrell and Washington--where the award will help fund new activities. These include new educational materials, health fairs at church sites, directories of breast cancer screening devices and transportation for low-income women.

Jo Anne Earp, professor of health behavior and health education in the School of Public Health, directs the screening program. It is part of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center's Specialized Program of Research Excellence in breast cancer.
