To lead requires being out front. But being a leading public university, Andy Johns has learned, means something slightly different.

For Carolina, being out front creates an opportunity to show others a better way. And it is out of that tradition that the idea of sharing the University-grown RAMSeS (Research Administration Management System and e-Submission) emerged.

Cox

In a classroom in Wilson Library, Robert Cox pauses to update his class about the sudden disintegration of a massive Antarctic ice shelf.

Raising his eyebrows, he gestures animatedly in front of satellite images depicting a slab of ice the size of Connecticut crumbling into the ocean.

With passion in his voice, he adopts a preacher- like rhythm that suggests that some of his words are italicized: “The physics of it are so uncertain and unstudied that we cannot model how quickly this will break down.” He is referring to scientists’ projections about how global warming will affect the rest of the ice.

Cox has good reason to be passionate about the collapse of Antarctic ice. In addition to teaching a course about global warming in the communication studies department, he is president of the board of directors of the Sierra Club.

Submissions

Contact us as early as possible and describe your story or idea, and we will let you know if we can include it in the Gazette.

Material must be submitted in written form. You can use the Got News? link in the blue banner above, or you can contact us by e-mail at gazette@unc.edu. Be sure to include your name and telephone number in case our staff needs more information. Material may also be sent by fax (962-2279) and campus mail (CB #6205). If you fax material, clearly mark it for the Gazette because we share the machine with other offices. We suggest you call to confirm receipt.

The editor reserves the right to decide what information will be published in the Gazette, a University publication, and to edit submissions for consistency with Gazette style, tone and content.

Calendar Submissions
The calendar lists events of general interest that are open to faculty and staff, sponsored by Carolina departments, and held within Orange County.

Include all necessary information, such as:

Sponsoring department or organization;
Date, time and location of event;
Title;
Presenter(s) and position or affiliation;
Fee;
Additional information, including registration deadline; and
Phone number and/or e-mail and web address for readers to obtain more information and to register for the event.

Note: Be sure to list your event on Carolina's main online calendar at www.unc.edu/calendar.

Send us your newsletter.
News Services' releases do not always reach us by our deadline, so do not rely on News Services to get material to us.
