Allen Anderson
Associate professor of music, Anderson has been awarded a Goddard Lieberson fellowship of $15,000, “given to mid-career composers of exceptional gifts” — one of 15 2005 music awards given by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

The academy was founded in 1898 to “foster, assist, and sustain an interest in literature, music and the fine arts.” The awards will be presented at the Academy’s annual Ceremonial in May.

Shrikant I. Bangdiwala
Professor in the Department of Biostatistics, Bangdiwala has received a Fulbright Senior Specialist award in the field of public/global health. The Fulbright Senior Specialists Program is designed to provide short-term academic opportunities for U.S. faculty and professionals, and is one of several new Fulbright initiatives administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.

Bangdiwala will spend six weeks this summer at the National University of Tucuman, Argentina for his first grant award. He will be involved in teaching an introductory graduate-level course on “Sampling Methodology” and an advanced doctoral course on “Multilevel Analysis.”

Rebecca Vargha
Librarian at the School of Information and Library Science, Vargha has been elected to serve as president-elect of the Special Libraries Association (SLA). She is the first person from the state to be chosen for this position.

Vargha will be installed on the SLA board of directors at the association’s 96th annual conference June 5 – 8 in Toronto. She will serve as president of the 12,000-member international professional organization beginning June 2006. SLA serves about 12,000 members in 83 countries in the information profession, including corporate, academic and government information specialists.
