School of Nursing addition

Overview

Project location: East side of existing building on North Medical Drive across from the Health Affairs Bookstore and adjacent to Berryhill Hall.

Projected cost/funding sources: $20.06 million/total -- $10.08 million/state bond; $5.48 million/private; $3.4 million/self-liquidating (overhead receipts); $1.1 million/self-liquidating (departmental).

Scope/benefits of project: Addition will house research, instructional and office space to support School of Nursing programs.

Square footage: 69,350.

Projected construction timeline: Oct. 1, 2002 - Nov. 2004.

Impact on Campus Aesthetics

Trees/green space/landscaping: A construction staging area will be west of the current building on the South Columbia Street side. Staging area trees will be protected from damage with mulch and logging mats. Trees at the addition site will be removed. Trees will be removed because of utility work on the hillside between Medical Drive and the North Chiller Plant. The building will incorporate a ground-level plaza across from the Health Affairs Bookstore and a green roof on the sixth-floor level that will serve as a stormwater management device and building amenity.

Architecture: The site and building will accommodate and improve the existing pedestrian circulation in the area. On the ground level, along Medical Drive, there will be a pedestrian arcade along the entire north side of the building. The main building entry will be across from the Health Affairs Bookstore and lead into a lobby. Exterior stairs will go through the building and connect Medical Drive directly to Berryhill Plaza. On the east end of the building, a "tower" and secondary entry will eventually address a plaza planned for the Bell Tower lot that will provide direct access between north campus and the Health Affairs area. The addition will be constructed to tie into the existing Carr-ington Hall on all floor levels and will be the same height as the existing building.

Impack on Parking and Transit, Traffic and Pedestrian Safety

Parking and transit: All existing parking spaces in the loading area between Carrington Hall and Berryhill Hall will be permanently lost because of the construction of the addition. A new loading dock and service area for Berryhill will be constructed in the first phase of the project. Parking spaces in front of the Health Affairs Bookstore and a few spaces along Medical Drive to the east of the bookstore will be temporarily lost during construction but will be replaced at the completion of the project.

Traffic: At least one lane of Medical Drive will remain open throughout construction. Traffic signals and flagmen will

control traffic in the vicinity of the construction site. Specially designated lanes will accommodate loading and unloading of construction materials so as not to impede the flow of traffic.

Pedestrian safety: Pedestrians will continue to be able to use the sidewalk on the north side of Medical Drive for most of the construction period. The stairs from the Bell Tower lot will remain open the entire time. Pedestrians are advised to use routes that avoid the construction site vicinity if possible.
