Construction Watch School
of Dentistry (Renovations to Old Dental School) Overview * Location: Manning Drive between Dental Sciences Research Building and Burnett-Womack. * Cost/funding source(s): $8 million/ bond. * Scope/benefits of project: The project will provide a comprehensive renovation (with conversion of space use) of the original School of Dentistry building. Work will include window replacement, ADA improvements, asbestos abatement, replacement of HVAC system, new sprinkler and fire alarm systems and upgrades to electrical and telecommunications systems. * Square footage: 300 (elevator tower). * Projected construction timeline: May 11, 2002 - May 28, 2004. * Swing space: Both wings will be closed during construction, but not at the same time. Some faculty and staff will be relocated to trailers on site. Impact on campus aesthetics * Trees/green space/landscaping: Plantings will be removed in interior courtyard due to utility work and will be replaced. * Architecture: The only new piece is the elevator tower in the interior courtyard, and it will be designed to match the existing buildings. * Impact on parking, transit and pedestrian safety * Parking and transit: Half of Brauer Parking lot will be used as a construction staging area. The loss will be temporary. * Pedestrian safety: Access to Macnider Hall through Old Dental will be maintained throughout the project but will be limited to one floor. No pedestrian access will be allowed through the interior courtyard during construction. Cameron Avenue between Phillips Hall and Gerrard Hall. * Cost/funding source(s): $800,000/state; $8.7 million/state bond; $5 million/private. * Scope/benefits of project: The project calls for the demolition of the existing stage house and additions to expand the stage house and public facilities. The expanded stage house will provide a larger stage with wing space and updated stage equipment and lighting, dressing rooms, a loading dock and rehearsal space. This project will address ADA compliance deficiencies, expand patron spaces, provide elevator service and update all building systems, including a new HVAC system with air-conditioning and significantly increase the number of toilet facilities. * Square footage: 30,325 square feet. * Projected construction timeline: May 22, 2002 - Dec. 16, 2003. * Swing space: The facility will be closed during the duration of construction. Impact on campus aesthetics * Trees/green space/landscaping: In general, the proposed landscaping will greatly enhance the area around Memorial Hall. Due to the additions, several trees and some existing greenspace will be displaced. The plan increases the number of planting materials and the quality of the green spaces that remain. The front entry will incorporate ramps for accessiblity with additional landscaping. * Architecture: The architects have respected the existing architectural character in the additions. The additions to the east and west sides of the building have been kept at a minimum width and replicate the height, detail and patterns established by the original building. The stage addition requires a taller structure than is currently found. To minimize the visual effects of the taller structure, the additions were designed to set back as much as possible beyond the more typical height east and west additions. Impact on parking, transit and pedestrian safety * Parking and transit:The Hanes visitors lot is being affected by construction and should be considered off-limits. There will be some time when the transit "drop-off" lane is altered, but it is not foreseen that construction will significantly impact the routes or times. * Pedestrian safety: Foot traffic will not be permitted through the Hanes lot. In addition, pedestrians heading south of Memorial Hall will follow the construction fence to the west by Phillips Annex. Existing curb cuts in the parking areas of Carroll, Memorial and Hanes will remain open.
